Mackens Bar

Established back in 1805 – making it Newcastle’s oldest pub – here at Macken’s Bar & Restaurant, we pride ourselves on delivering the very best in old-fashioned Co Down seaside hospitality. Whether it’s a roaring open fire, a toe-tapping trad music session, or just a quiet corner for a drink & a catch-up, our relaxed wee bar has you covered.

Macken’s has been at the heart of harbour life here for well over two centuries now; an informal establishment still much beloved of its community, & a welcoming, authentic haven for all visitors, providing the creamiest pints, the tastiest pub grub & the best craic going, overlooking picture-perfect views across the whole of Dundrum Bay. The walls are packed with original photos, paintings & keepsakes to scour, historical mementoes of Harbour life, & local characters old & new. And up in the kitchen, Head Chef Roger specialises in delivering mouthwatering locally-sourced fish & shellfish dishes to hungry diners (there is a wealth of other delicious meals to choose from though, to cater for any appetite!).

Live music plays a big part here too, from renowned open mic Wednesday nightsessions, to established local artists, up & coming vocalists, not to mention the legendary Mackens Trad Session; a firm Friday fixture that has to be experienced to be believed, ideally with Guinness in hand! Our location could not be better as a walker’s rest (or surfer, or cyclist, or swimmer!), nestled as we are at the base of The Mournes, with easy access to a wide selection of unforgettable mountain walks to sharpen the thirst, such as the Granite Trail. Ask at the bar to find out more to explore!

For it is written above the bar – Arrive as a Guest, Leave as a Friend. In a fast-moving world, here at Macken’s we take things a wee bit more leisurely, and we’ve been doing it like that for over a couple of hundred years now – sure, come on in, pull up a chair, drink in that view & soon, you’ll see for yourself. Slainte!”
